SYNW
URGES MAKINDE AND OYETOLA TO REVIVE DWINDLING READING CULTURE IN THEIR STATES
The Society of Young
Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has lamented the dearth of reading culture among Osun and Oyo state
citizens especially the youths, saying this is one of the factors
affecting the quality of education and which is also hindering the development
of the two states.
This was contained in a
statement issued and signed by the National President of the Society of Young
Nigerian Writers (SYNW), Wole Adedoyin and made available to newsmen in Ibadan.
According to Wole
Adedoyin who is also the National Publicity Secretary (South) of the
Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) “ Both the Oyo and Osun State Governors
should come up with reading and library enhancement projects aim at encouraging
general reading and improving the reading culture of readers in their respective
states. Reading enriches and broadens the mind,”
The creation of Ibadan
Book Club and Osogbo Book Club by the Society of Young Nigerian Writers in 2014
in the two states was part of the society’s effort to promote reading culture
in the two states.
The vision of the club is to encourage students to be
enthusiastic readers and be committed to using the library to acquire
knowledge.
“We are urging both Governor
Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to
collaborate with the concerned stakeholders and initiate reading projects aim
at reducing or putting an end to the dwindling reading culture of the two
states and upgrade their states libraries with modern and educative literary
books. What we have in the two states now are cemetery of dead and outdated
books”
SYNW finally called on public
office holders and politicians in positions of authority to initiate and
implement programmes that would promote the reading culture in their respective
states.
