CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ABEOKUTA WRITERS WORKSHOP

 


 

Abeokuta Writers Workshop is an avenue where writers develop their craft and come together in the spirit of discovery and fellowship. The workshop promises to explore the craft of writing in a way that is clear, practical, and inspiring. Also designed for writers who have a specific project started or visioned, and want to get busy writing, imagining and sharing their worlds with others.

 

Abeokuta Book Club welcomes all interested Ogun state citizens who want to learn more about writing and publishing, no matter their age, experience, or education.

 

The Workshop has been slated to take place on the 18th day of September, 2021.

 

Abeokuta Writers Workshop will encourage participants to think of themselves as writers and take their writing seriously. It will also give them the skills to express their important thoughts and celebrates the fact that their stories and ideas matter and are worth expressing.

 

The workshop will also help the participants to: Discover themselves and their writing paths, Find out what their writing strengths are, Accept the weaknesses in their writing, Learn to handle critiques of their works, Meet people who share their passion, Improve their writing, Adopt new writing techniques, Get access to a mentor, Gain experience and get a lot of creative writing practice.

 

 

Some of the topics to cover include: Fundamentals of Creative Writing (Poetry, Prose and Drama), Obtaining ISBN, ISSN, character development, publishing, editing, scriptwriting, graphics design, illustration, electronic publishing, ghost writing etc.

BADEJO BEATRICE MORENIKE

Badejo Beatrice Morenike is currently the ISBN/ISSN Desk Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Ogun State branch. A practicing Librarian; She got her diploma and Degree in Library and Information science from Bayero University Kano. A Certified Librarian with the Librarian's Registration Council. Badejo Beatrice Morenike has Participated in many conferences and workshops. She is also a member of the Nigerian Library Association.

SAINT-OLAWALE JIMOH

Saint-Olawale Jimoh is the Founder of Saint-Olawale Jimoh's Literary Foundation for African Children (which had her maiden Writing Competition recently), a self funded project aimed at awakening the literariness in African Children. He's equally the Founder and President of the Observers' Reflections International, an intellectual and sensitization project, committed to repositioning our society for better, through blogging and writing.

He is a proud winner of the Distinguished John Bunyan for Creative Writing; a paid writer, published author, blogger, biographer, social commentator and media entrepreneur.

A member of the Society Of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), International Writers' Association (IWA), a Fellow of Rob Parnell's Writing Academy and an alumnus of the prestigious Political Academy, a Nigerian pioneer private platform for mentoring aspiring leaders and political players.

Over the years, he has authored 7 books including the newly published one titled 'Journey to Self' which is fast growing into a bestseller. He has equally written over 150 articles published online and in few Nigerian newspapers some of which provoked debates and earned him recognitions home and abroad. One of his works titled, 'TEN KINGS, TEN ERAS (A Message to People in Power at the Moment)' was recently featured on Martin Firell Public Art Text for The Paul Hamlyn Foundation Perfomance of Tosca- The Royal Opera House London.

SHINA FASANMI

Shina Fasanmi is a freelance writer and a former Coordinator of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW). He teaches Use of English, Advanced Writing Skills and Creative Writing on online platforms. Some of his creative writings have featured in Nigerian dallies and journals. He is a reporter for Opera News.

ADEMOLA AYOMIDE MIRACLE

Ademola Ayomide Miracle is a nutritionist, lifestyle therapist, a writer, a speaker, and a climate change advocate.

He is the CEO of Ourdiet Line, an organization that gives updates about the new developments in the field of nutrition and health, the organization also deliver lectures and teachings concerning healthy living and healthy eating through outreaches and online platforms.

He has written several poems and books so as to enlighten readers on several issues of life. One of his books is "My Passion, My Course", a book that teaches how to merge passion with reality. He was one of the over 60 writers from 14 countries that wrote a global anthology titled "war against fake news". He was an editor of an anthology on rape titled "GET CONSENT.

He has also acquired several trainings and certifications from institutions such as Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dubai., Nigeria Red Cross society and Initiative for Sound Education, Relationship and Health (ISERH) among others. He is also a member and ambassador of quite a number of organizations such as People of Possibility, Difference Maker Corporation, Global Warming Shield foundation, people of possibility and Ecogreen among others.

He is an alumnus of Federal Polytechnic, Ede where he earned a diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics and currently an undergraduate of Federal university of Agriculture, Abeokuta studying the same course. He has received several awards especially in regard to his academic pursuit and he is currently the Deputy Campus Director of Hultprize in Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

He is a passionate young man committed to making Nigeria and the world in general a better place through health and nutrition advocacy, writing, climate change advocacy, entrepreneurship, leadership and any other opportunities that shall be available.

TEMILADE AJAYI

Temilade Ajayi was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State where she had her primary and secondary education before proceeding to Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye for her first degree in Yoruba Language in 2014. She did her mandatory one year service at Federal Government College, Sokoto in 2017 and was retained as a Yoruba Language teacher till she resigned in April, 2021. Presently, she is a teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic College, Oke-Ilewo Abeokuta, her Alma mater. She is a teacher by profession and a writer by passion.

DARASIMI ADEOYE

Darasimi Adeoye is a graduate of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta. Ogun State, Nigeria. She is currently the Coordinator of Abeokuta Book Club.

ABEOKUTA BOOK CLUB, IHRAF TO ORGANIZE ABEOKUTA WRITERS WORKSHOP

 


 

Abeokuta Book Club in conjunction with the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF), African Chapter will on the 18th day of September, 2021 organize a one day practical training workshop for Ogun state based writers, publishers, bloggers, librarians and editors.

 

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Coordinator of the Club, Darasimi Adeoye in Abeokuta on Saturday.

 

According to the release, the workshop will encourage participants to think of themselves as writers and take their writing seriously. It will also give them the skills to express their important thoughts and celebrates the fact that their stories and ideas matter and are worth expressing.

Call for Submission: Sixth Chinua Achebe Poetry/Essay Anthology

 

CALL FOR SUBMISSION: SIXTH CHINUA ACHEBE POETRY/ESSAY ANTHOLOGY

 


Society of Young Nigerian Writers (Anambra State Chapter) —the literary body that hosts Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture— is calling for submission of quality poems and essays from writers across the world, for her 6th Chinua Achebe Poetry/Essay Anthology.

 

The annual anthology is published in honour and memory of Late Prof. Chinua Achebe, a foremost Nigerian literary legend and father of morden African Literature. The prestigious anthology will (as usual) be unveiled at the 6th edition of Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture, which is slated to hold on 16th November 2021, at the Anambra State Central E-Library (also known as Prof. Kenneth Dike Central E-Library), in Awka, south-eastern Nigeria.

 

According to the Project Coordinator, Izunna Okafor, who is also the Coordinator of Society of Young Nigerian Writers in Anambra State and Editor-in-Chief of the Anthology, Chinua Achebe Literary Festival is an annual literary festival held by Society of Young Nigerian Writers in memory and honour of Achebe, in celebration of his life, works, contributions and legacies in the literary field. 

The event, he noted, was initiated in 2016, and holds on Achebe's date of birth (16th November) every year since then, with the last edition held in 2020, during which the most recent edition of the Chinua Achebe Essay/Poetry Anthology —'Achebe: A Man of the People' —was published.

 

"It is with a view to mark this year's edition of the Festival in a more remarkable and memorable way that we are calling on both burgeoning and established writers from different parts of the world, to enter their quality and thematically-written poems and essays for this sixth anthology," Okafor said. 

 

"The anthology is in honour of Prof. Chinua Achebe; hence, only entries that relate to or revolve around Achebe, his works, his literary prowess and legacies will be accepted for publication," he added.

 


SUBMISSION GUIDELINES/RULES:

1. Only poems essays/reviews are accepted for the anthology.

2. Entrant must specify the genre of his entry; that is, specify if it is poetry or essay/review. 

3. The poems and essays/reviews MUST relate to or revolve around either Achebe as a person (his personality), his works, his literary prowess/feats, life, legacies or other areas.

4. The essay or poem should be as brief and concise as possible — maximum of 500 words for essays/reviews, and maximum of 30 lines for poetry.

5. Author’s information —location/contact address, phone number, e-mail address, with a short bio of NOT more than 40 words should be included in the submission.

6. Submission is FREE and open to writers from any part of the world.

7. Entry MUST be the original work of the author/poet. ANY PLAGIARISED WORK WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED.

8. Only ONE entry per person is allowed.

9. Entrant may choose/write on any interesting title of his/her choice.

12. Entry and its title MUST be type-written and sent in the body of the mail; NOT AS ATTACHMENT. Entries sent as attachment will be automatically disqualified.

13. Submission Deadline: 30th SEPTEMBER 2021
Late entry/submission will not be ACCEPTED.

13. Entry may be written in either English or Igbo Language.

 


BENEFITS:

● All successful/accepted essays and poetry will be published in the Sixth Chinua Achebe Poetry/Essay Anthology (soft and hard copies).

● Online promotion of successful/published essays and poems and the entrants.

● All successful entrants shall receive Certificate of Participation.
