The Nigerian Society of Campus Writers (NSCW), the student arm of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), has announced their upcoming writers’ conference, "Writerference 2024: Enchanting Words, A Literacy Odyssey." This one-day event, taking place on May 9th, 2024, promises to be a haven for aspiring and established writers seeking to ignite their creativity, hone their craft, and explore exciting opportunities in the literary world.

In a press release from Maduekwe Cynthia Chinenye, the first female NSCW President, said the Conference will be held on May 9th, 2024, at Rimad Hall in Satellite Town, Calabar, kicking off at noon. Writers Congratulate Hafsat Abdulwaheed Over Honorary Doctorate Conferment

 WRITERS CONGRATULATE HAFSAT ABDULWAHEED OVER HONORARY DOCTORATE CONFERMENT

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has congratulated renowned writer, Hajiya Hafsat Abdulwaheed on receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) during its 13th Convocation ceremony.

In a statement issued by the President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, Wole Adedoyin described this  honor as a testimony to Abdulwaheed's exceptional career as a writer, poet, and champion of women's rights.

According to the release, "She is a true pioneer in Nigeria's literary landscape."

The Society itself previously recognized Abdulwaheed in 2017 for her "Read Across Nigeria" project, which took readings and brought her works to ten states across the country in her honor.

Born in 1952, Abdulwaheed holds the distinction of being the first female Hausa writer from Northern Nigeria to publish a novel.

Her literary path began in primary school, where she crafted folktales that earned her early acclaim, including an award from the British Council.

In 1970, Hajiya Abdulwaheed entered a competition organized by the Northern Nigerian Publishing Company (NNPC) with her story "So Aljannar Duniya" ("Love is Paradise on Earth"). Inspired by her sister's marital challenges navigating cultural differences, this work became her most celebrated piece.

"So Aljannar Duniya" not only secured second place but is also credited with pioneering the development of modern Hausa love stories, known as "Littattafan Soyayya" or "Love Books," and "Kano Market Literature." As Cara Giaimo cites Abdallah Uba Adamu and Graham Furniss, this novel "really set the world alight to [Hausa] love-story writing."

Abdulwaheed's literary contributions extend far beyond this groundbreaking work. 

Her published works include "Yardubu Mai Tambotsai" ("Yardubu the Possessed" - fiction), "Nasiha ga Ma'aura" (Admonition for the Married Couple - non-fiction), "Namijin Maza Tauraron Annabawa" (a non-fiction piece on the life of Muhammad), and her first English poetry collection, "Ancient Dance."

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers takes immense pride in celebrating Hajiya Abdulwaheed's achievements and the lasting impact she has made on Nigerian literature and society.

Writers Congratulate Dr. Wale Okediran on his 69th Birthday

 WRITERS CONGRATULATE DR. WALE OKEDIRAN ON HIS 69TH BIRTHDAY

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has congratulated Dr. Wale Okediran on the occasion of his 69th birthday.

In a press statement issued today by the Society's President, Wole Adedoyin, the organization commended Dr. Okediran's significant contributions to the literary landscape in Nigeria and Africa.

Adedoyin highlighted the Ebedi Writers Residency program founded by Dr. Okediran, which has empowered over 200 writers from across Africa to refine their craft and see their works published.

The Society also acknowledged Dr. Okediran's unwavering support, particularly towards their book clubs and various literary initiatives. 

These include creative writing workshops, seminars, conferences, and monthly book reading events.

The press release emphasized the positive impact of the Ebedi Writers Residency on the Society's members.

Over 15 members have participated in the five-week program, and many have become published authors since.

Dr. Okediran's dedication to nurturing both emerging and established writers was further recognized.  

The statement lauded his current role as Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association and his previous term as President of the Association of Nigerian Authors.

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has expressed its warm wishes to Muslims across the country as they celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, marking the joyous culmination of the holy month of Ramadan.

In a press release issued by the Society’s President, Wole Adedoyin, the SYNW conveyed its heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim faithful for successfully completing the 30-day fast. The statement acknowledged the spiritual significance of Ramadan, highlighting how it brings believers closer to Allah through prayer, reflection, and self-discipline.

The SYNW further commended Muslims for their dedication and perseverance throughout the holy month. The press release emphasized the importance of Ramadan in fostering compassion, empathy, and a sense of community.

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has extended its congratulations to Dr. Wale Okediran, Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), for the triumphant hosting of the World Organization of Writers (WOW) Congress. This landmark event, which convened writers from across the globe, took place in Abuja, Nigeria, from April 4th to 6th, 2024.

In a statement released by the president of the Society, Wole Adedoyin, from Ibadan on Monday, the SYNW expressed its admiration for Dr. Wale Okediran's outstanding leadership and organizational prowess in orchestrating such a significant gathering.

Held in the vibrant city of Abuja, the WOW Congress served as a testimony to Dr. Okediran's dedication to fostering international literary dialogue and collaboration. This momentous event brought together writers from across the globe, solidifying its place in history.
