Society of Young Nigerian Writers Celebrates Dr. Tony Marinho on His 76th Birthday

 

SOCIETY OF YOUNG NIGERIAN WRITERS CELEBRATES DR. TONY MARINHO ON HIS 76TH BIRTHDAY

 


Writers under the aegis of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW Global) have joined family, friends, and admirers worldwide to celebrate the 76th birthday of renowned obstetrician, gynaecologist, and prolific writer, Dr. Anthony Olatokunbo Marinho. A shining beacon of service to humanity and an accomplished author, Dr. Marinho has left indelible marks in medicine, literature, and community development.

Born on January 8, 1949, Dr. Marinho has conducted over 3,000 life-saving caesarean sections in a medical career spanning decades. His humanitarian work extends beyond the walls of hospitals through his founding of Educare Trust, which has provided IT training to over 6,000 Nigerian youths. In memory of his late wife, he also established the Lola Marinho Breast Cancer Foundation, a testimony to his enduring commitment to public health and welfare.

Dr. Marinho’s literary prowess is equally remarkable. He is the author of over two dozen works, including novels, children’s books, collections of poetry, and plays. Among his notable works are The Laterite Road - An African Travel Odyssey, Hope's Wristwatch, The Epidemic, The Healer’s Mistake, The Victim, and Why UI?, a play that was successfully performed at the Arts Theatre of the University of Ibadan in 1999. His works span themes of hope, social justice, education, and human resilience, offering profound insights into the African experience.

A medal-winning medical graduate of the University of Ibadan, Dr. Marinho demonstrated leadership from his early days as Head Boy at St. Gregory’s College, Ikoyi, Lagos. During his Youth Corps service in Plateau State, he wrote his first book, The Victim, marking the beginning of a storied writing career. He has since been an active voice in the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), inspiring countless writers.

Through his NGO, Educare Trust, Dr. Marinho has empowered young Nigerians with education and health initiatives. His tireless efforts to foster critical thinking and social responsibility among youths have cemented his legacy as a champion of knowledge and development.

Described as a social critic and advocate, Dr. Marinho writes extensively on national issues, leveraging his platform to call for better governance and societal reforms. His eloquence and dedication have made him a respected voice in public discourse both within and outside Nigeria.
