IWA CELEBRATES RENOWNED AUTHOR LOLA SHONEYIN ON HER 50TH BIRTHDAY

The International Writers Association (IWA) today extended its warmest congratulations to the founder of the Ake Book and Arts Festival, Lola Shoneyin, on the momentous occasion of her 50th birthday.

In a heartfelt statement issued by IWA Acting President Wole Adedoyin, Shoneyin was lauded for her exceptional contributions to the literary landscape, both nationally and internationally. Adedoyin commended her not only for her captivating prose and poetry but also for her unwavering dedication to fostering a vibrant literary community in Africa.

"Lola Shoneyin is a true gem of African literature," Adedoyin declared. "Her powerful writing, infused with humor and candor, has resonated with readers worldwide, igniting conversations on critical themes like female empowerment and social realities. We at the IWA are immensely proud to celebrate her remarkable achievements and the profound impact she has made on the literary world."

Shoneyin's literary journey began with the publication of her debut novel, "The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives," in 2010. This captivating exploration of female sexuality and domestic struggles in Africa garnered widespread acclaim, including the PEN Award in America and the Ken Saro-Wiwa Award in Nigeria. Her prolificacy extends to three poetry collections, each showcasing her adventurous spirit and outspoken voice, often categorized within the feminist lens.

In 2014, Shoneyin's talent was further recognized by her inclusion on the Hay Festival's Africa39 list, honoring the most promising writers under 40 shaping the future of African literature. This prestigious recognition solidified her position as a leading voice in contemporary African literature.

Beyond her own creative pursuits, Shoneyin has played a pivotal role in nurturing the literary scene in Nigeria. In 2013, she established the Ake Book and Arts Festival, a renowned annual event that brings together writers, artists, and book lovers from across the globe. This transformative initiative has become a cornerstone for literary exchange and dialogue in Africa, fostering connections and celebrating the diversity of African voices.

In 2017, Shoneyin's dedication to literature was further acknowledged with the title of African Literary Person of the Year by Brittle Paper. This well-deserved accolade reflects the immense respect and admiration she commands within the literary community.

As Shoneyin embarks on this new chapter, the IWA joined the global literary community in celebrating her extraordinary journey and commending her unwavering commitment to storytelling and literary excellence. The IWA has no doubt that she will continue to inspire and empower readers and writers alike for many years to come.
