SYNW CONGRATULATES ODIA OFEIMUN ON HIS 73RD BIRTHDAY


 

Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has congratulated Odia Ofeimun on the occasion of his 73rd birthday. Odia Ofeimun is a renowned Nigerian poet, essayist, and social critic, who has contributed immensely to the literary and intellectual landscape of Nigeria and beyond.

In a statement signed by the President of the Society, Wole Adedoyin said Odia Ofeimun has been a major figure in Nigerian literature for several decades. He has published several collections of poetry, including The Poet Lied (1980), A Handle for the Flutist (1986), and A Feast of Return (2000), as well as numerous essays and critical works on literature, politics, and society.

Odia Ofeimun's contributions to Nigerian literature and culture have been recognized both nationally and internationally.

Apart from his literary works, Odia Ofeimun has also been active in politics and social activism. He was a prominent member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the struggle against military dictatorship in Nigeria in the 1990s, and he has continued to speak out on issues of democracy, human rights, and social justice in Nigeria and beyond.

Odia Ofeimun's poetry is known for its social and political commentary, as well as its deep engagement with Nigerian and African history and culture. His use of language is inventive and playful, and his works are characterized by a deep sense of irony and satire.

As a mentor to younger Nigerian writers, Odia Ofeimun has played a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of literary talent in Nigeria.
