Writers Celebrate 102nd, 83rd Posthumous Birthdays of Dr. Adebayo Faleti, Omolara Ogundipe-leslie

 WRITERS CELEBRATE 102ND, 83RD POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAYS OF DR. ADEBAYO FALETI, OMOLARA OGUNDIPE-LESLIE

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), led by Wole Adedoyin has joyously commemorated the 102nd and 83rd posthumous birthdays of the late Dr. Adebayo Faleti and Prof. Omolara Ogundipe-Leslie.

Adebayo Mosobalaje Faleti (26 December 1921 – 23 July 2017), a luminary figure, was Africa's first newscaster, Nigeria's inaugural film editor, and the pioneering director of stage plays. 

A distinguished poet, journalist, and actor, Faleti's legacy extends to being Nigeria's first Yoruba presenter on television and radio. 

His significant contributions also include serving as a librarian with Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), the continent's maiden television station, now known as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Omolara Ogundipe-Leslie (27 December 1940 – 18 June 2019), also known as Molara Ogundipe, stands out as a Nigerian poet, critic, editor, feminist, and activist. 

Renowned for her work in African feminism, gender studies, and literary theory, Ogundipe-Leslie's influence reached far and wide. 

Her groundbreaking piece "Not Spinning on the Axis of Maleness" in the 1984 anthology Sisterhood Is Global solidified her as a vital authority on African women within the feminist discourse. Notably, she coined the term STIWA, reflecting her commitment to Social Transformation in Africa Including Women.

Despite the absence of physical or virtual celebrations, SYNW members collectively honored the enduring legacies of Dr. Adebayo Faleti and Prof. Omolara Ogundipe-Leslie. 

According to the release, "Their pioneering contributions to literature, broadcasting, and feminist thought continue to inspire and shape the literary landscape in Nigeria and beyond."

SYNW Celebrates Prof. Akinwumi Isola's 84th Posthumous Birthday

SYNW CELEBRATES PROF. AKINWUMI ISOLA'S 84TH POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has paid tribute to the late Prof. Akinwumi Isola, on what would have been his 84th birthday. 

In a statement issued by the President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) Wole Adedoyin, said Akinwumi Isola was a Yoruba playwright, novelist, actor, dramatist, culture activist, and scholar. He was known for his writing in, and his work in promoting, the Yoruba language.

Isola was born on December 24, 1939, in Imesi-Ile, Osun State, Nigeria. He studied English at the University of Ibadan, where he graduated in 1962. After graduating, he taught at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) until his retirement in 1991.

Isola's work has been widely praised for its depth and complexity. 

His plays and novels often deal with themes of social injustice, political corruption, and the importance of cultural identity. His work has been translated into many languages and has been performed all over the world.

In addition to his writing, Isola was also a committed activist. He was a founding member of the Yoruba Studies Association of Nigeria and was a vocal critic of the Nigerian government's policies towards the Yoruba language.

Akinwumi Isola's legacy transcends genres; he was known for his exceptional contributions to the Yoruba language, evident in his plays, novels, and cultural activism. His iconic works, including "Efunsetan Aniwura" and "O Le Ku," exemplify his literary prowess and commitment to preserving the richness of the Yoruba culture.

In addition to his literary achievements, Akinwumi Isola ventured into broadcasting, establishing a production company that transformed many of his plays into television dramas and films. Despite primarily targeting Yoruba audiences, he wrote in both Yoruba and English, showcasing his versatility and commitment to cultural inclusivity.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Prof. Isola received the National Merit Award in 2000 and was appointed a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. His influence extended beyond Nigeria, as he served as a visiting professor at the University of Georgia.

Isola died on February 17, 2018, at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Aina, and his four children.

Ibadan Book Club to bestow honours upon exemplary members

In a statement issued by the President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, Wole Adedoyin,said as the pioneer Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) in Bayelsa State, Pope Pen has made significant contributions to the literary landscape of the region and beyond.

Hailing from Nembe, Bayelsa State, Pope Pen pursued his education in English & Literary Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. His diverse career has seen him excel as a journalist, broadcaster, and public relations expert. Notably, he served as Speech Writer and Special Adviser on Research & Documentation to the Governors of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and Dr Goodluck Jonathan, demonstrating his commitment to public service.

Pope Pen's literary prowess shines through in his numerous works, with "Mantids," his debut collection of poems, securing the prestigious ANA poetry prize in 1995. The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), a member of the International Authors Forum (IAF)  has announced the appointment of Mr. Saliu Ahmad Toyin as the Coordinator of the Ilorin Book Club. The decision, made by the National Executive Council, led by Wole Adedoyin, is a testament to Saliu Ahmad Toyin's exceptional merit, extensive experience, and unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant reading culture in Kwara State.

Saliu Ahmad Toyin, widely known as Penwarlord, is a distinguished writer and spoken word poetry artist hailing from Ilorin. His academic background includes a degree in English and Literary Studies from Kwara State University (2014) and Al-hikmah University (2021). The appointment, effective immediately, reflects SYNW's confidence in Saliu Ahmad Toyin's ability to lead the Ilorin Book Club to new heights in promoting literary endeavors within the community.

The Ilorin Book Club, under the leadership of Saliu Ahmad Toyin, aims to build on its past successes, such as the well-received Short Story & Content Writing Webinar held on July 18, 2022. This event featured distinguished guest speakers Mrs. Betty Ige and Mr. Don Veta, who shared insights on Short Story Writing Mechanics and Fundamentals of Content Creation, respectively.

Saliu Ahmad Toyin, alias Penwarlord, has a remarkable track record, having shared stages with notable writers such as Prof. Niyi Osundare, Prof. Olu Obafemi, Sheriff Olanrewaju (Author Jahid), and others. His literary works, including 'The Eye-Opener' and 'Extract from the Hourglass,' along with spoken word poetry audios like 'EndSars,' 'Beast of All Nations,' and 'Race of Life,' have gained widespread acclaim.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Saliu Ahmad Toyin is an educator, currently teaching 'Literature in English' at a secondary school in Ilorin. He also offers private classes for TOEFL, DUOLINGO, and IELTS, showcasing his dedication to nurturing the next generation of creative minds.
