SYNW CELEBRATES MAMMAN VATSA'S 83RD POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY
In a heartfelt commemoration, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has paid tribute to the late Major General Mamman Vatsa on what would have been his 83rd birthday.
The official press statement was issued by SYNW President, Wole Adedoyin.
Late General Mamman Vatsa, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Abuja, left an indelible mark on the literary landscape of Nigeria. His noteworthy contributions to the growth of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) included the generous donation of land along Mpape road, FCT, which now houses the national secretariat known as Writers' Village.
A multifaceted personality, General Vatsa was not only a dedicated soldier and administrator but also an accomplished poet and writer. His philanthropic endeavors touched numerous lives, showcasing his commitment to the well-being of the community.
General Vatsa's legacy extends beyond his military and administrative roles. He played a pivotal role in fostering the literary arts in Nigeria, organizing writing workshops for fellow soldiers and their children. His support extended to the Children's Literature Association of Nigeria, where he provided financial assistance.
As an author, General Vatsa left an enduring literary footprint with eight poetry collections for adults and 11 for children. Titles such as "Back Again at Wargate" (1982), "Reach for the Skies" (1984), and "Verses for Nigerian State Capitals" (1973) showcase his ability to capture ordinary lives and simple creatures.
Notable among his works is the pidgin collection "Tori for Geti Bow Leg" (1981) and the cultural picture book in Hausa, "Bikin Suna," demonstrating his commitment to diverse literary expressions.
