WRITERS CONGRATULATE NENGI JOSEF OWEI-ILAGHA ON HIS BIRTHDAY
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has extended its warm congratulations to Prince Nengi Josef Owei-ilagha, popularly known as Pope Pen The First, on the occasion of his birthday today.
In a statement issued by the President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, Wole Adedoyin,said as the pioneer Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) in Bayelsa State, Pope Pen has made significant contributions to the literary landscape of the region and beyond.
Hailing from Nembe, Bayelsa State, Pope Pen pursued his education in English & Literary Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. His diverse career has seen him excel as a journalist, broadcaster, and public relations expert. Notably, he served as Speech Writer and Special Adviser on Research & Documentation to the Governors of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and Dr Goodluck Jonathan, demonstrating his commitment to public service.
Pope Pen's literary prowess shines through in his numerous works, with "Mantids," his debut collection of poems, securing the prestigious ANA poetry prize in 1995. His literary journey has produced several books, including "A Birthday Delight," a compilation of short stories, and "I Want To Be A Senator," a collection of essays addressing the state of the nation.
As an accomplished author, Pope Pen's book of poems, "January Gestures," garnered attention as a contender for the 2009 NLNG-sponsored Nigeria Prize for Literature, reflecting his impact on the national literary scene.
Beyond his literary pursuits, Pope Pen serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Maritime University, Delta State, and is the publisher of Coastline News Network, a news magazine focusing on the Niger Delta. His commitment to both literature and public service exemplifies a remarkable blend of passion and dedication.
